The peptide therapy market is rapidly expanding – but not all providers operate within safe, legal boundaries. Recent FDA enforcement actions and the cautionary lessons from past compounding disasters have made one thing clear: compliance is not optional, and "tested" does not mean "safe."
The Risk Landscape
- Many peptide products available today exist in regulatory gray zones:
- Manufactured outside FDA-approved pathways
- Labeled "research use only" while marketed for human use
- Marketed as "third-party tested" without full safety validation
- Distributed without proper FDA manufacturing oversight

What "Tested" Actually Means
- Most peptide Certificates of Analysis (CoAs) confirm only identity and approximate purity. They typically do not confirm:

- A CoA is not an FDA approval and not a safety guarantee.
Recent FDA Enforcement
- The FDA has explicitly removed certain peptides (including BPC-157 and TB-500) from the list of substances eligible for compounding. This means:
- They cannot be legally compounded under 503A regulations
- They are not permitted under 503B outsourcing facilities
- There is no compliant federal pathway for their sale or prescription
